Auto Shop Tire Rotation Procedure

A shop owner standardizing tire rotations so techs follow the correct pattern, torque spec, and TPMS reset every time.

Who it's for

Technicians performing tire rotation on any passenger vehicle.

When to run it

Every tire rotation service, whether standalone or paired with an oil change.

Before you start

  • Torque wrench calibrated for lug nut spec
  • TPMS reset tool if vehicle has TPMS
  • Work order confirms rotation pattern (directional vs non-directional tires, AWD vs FWD)

The procedure

Step-by-step, in order. Each step has the action and the reason it matters.

  1. 1

Confirm tire type and correct rotation pattern before starting

Check: are tires directional (arrow on sidewall) or non-directional? Is the vehicle FWD, RWD, or AWD? Directional tires only rotate front-to-rear on the same side. Non-directional FWD: forward cross (rears go straight forward, fronts cross to rear). AWD: X-pattern. Wrong pattern on directional tires destroys the tire.

Why: One wrong rotation pattern on a performance directional tire costs $400+ in replacement. This check takes 30 seconds.

  2. 2

Loosen all lug nuts before raising the vehicle

With tires on the ground, loosen each lug nut one turn counterclockwise. Do not remove. This prevents the wheel from spinning freely when you try to break loose a tight lug.

Why: Trying to loosen lug nuts on a lifted, freely-spinning wheel wastes time and can spin the hub.

  3. 3

Raise the vehicle and remove all four wheels

Raise to working height using correct lift points. Remove all four wheels, set them in rotation order matching your confirmed pattern. Keep lug nuts in each wheel's center to avoid mix-ups.

Why: Mixing lug nuts from different wheels causes thread damage if the thread pitch or seat type differs.

  4. 4

    Inspect each tire during movement

As you move each wheel, inspect: tread depth (1/32nds) at three points across the width, sidewall for cracking or bulges, inside edge wear indicating alignment issue. Note anything abnormal on the work order.

Why: A tire rotation is the best diagnostic opportunity you get. An unnoticed sidewall bulge that blows out after the visit is a liability.

  5. 5

Inspect brakes while wheels are off

Check brake pad thickness at each corner — measure with a gauge if available, estimate visually at minimum. Record measurements. Check rotors for grooves, heat cracks, or minimum thickness. This is included in the rotation service and must be documented.

Why: Tire rotation without a brake check misses the primary upsell and service safety opportunity. It also leaves you liable if brakes fail shortly after.

  6. 6

Mount wheels in the confirmed rotation pattern

Thread each wheel on by hand first — never with an impact gun until hand-tight. Tighten in a star pattern to seat the wheel flat.

Why: Cross-threading a lug nut on a wheel stud is a $150+ repair. Impact guns without hand-threading cause this.

  7. 7

Torque all lug nuts to spec in a star pattern

Look up torque spec for this vehicle. Do not use a universal value. Torque to spec with a calibrated torque wrench in a star pattern. Do a second pass on every wheel.

Why: Most passenger vehicles spec 80–120 ft-lbs. Overtorque warps rotors. Undertorque causes wheel-off events that the shop owns.

  8. 8

    Recheck and equalize tire pressures

Check all four tires against the door jamb sticker spec — not the maximum pressure on the tire sidewall. Adjust to spec. This is mandatory, not optional.

Why: Pressure equalization is a core deliverable of a rotation service. A tire 10 PSI off spec after a paid rotation is a service failure.

  9. 9

    Reset TPMS if applicable

If the vehicle has TPMS, use the vehicle-specific reset procedure or TPMS tool. Verify the warning light clears. Record in work order.

Why: A TPMS light on after a rotation generates a free return visit and an unhappy customer.

Verify when done

  • Rotation pattern confirmed for tire type and drivetrain before start
  • Tread depth and sidewall condition noted on work order
  • Brake measurements recorded on work order
  • Lug nuts torqued to spec in star pattern with second pass
  • Tire pressures equalized to door jamb spec
  • TPMS light cleared

Common mistakes

  • Rotating directional tires across sides
  • Using a generic torque value instead of vehicle-specific spec
  • Skipping brake inspection
  • Forgetting to reset TPMS after rotation

Trainer notes

New techs most commonly fail on two steps: using the wrong rotation pattern for directional tires, and skipping the torque wrench second pass. Both have consequential failure modes. Require supervisor sign-off on rotation pattern selection for first 60 days.

Common questions

Who should run the auto shop tire rotation procedure?

Technicians performing tire rotation on any passenger vehicle.

When should this auto shop procedure be run?

Every tire rotation service, whether standalone or paired with an oil change.

How many steps does the auto shop tire rotation procedure have?

9 steps. The procedure starts with "Confirm tire type and correct rotation pattern before starting" and ends with "Reset TPMS if applicable". Each step in between has the action and the reason it matters.

What's the most common mistake when running this procedure?

Rotating directional tires across sides. New techs most commonly fail on two steps: using the wrong rotation pattern for directional tires, and skipping the torque wrench second pass. Both have consequential failure modes. Require supervisor sign-off on rotation pattern selection for first 60 days.
